Remove free-floating, dispersed, and loosely emulsified tramp oil from metalworking coolant with T.O.S.S. This autonomous coolant oil separator treats machine sumps, parts washers, large reservoirs, and coolant pits, returning clarified fluid by gravity without interrupting the machine.
T.O.S.S. combines a floating skimmer, bag filter, and polypropylene coalescing pack in one tramp oil removal system. The skimmer draws oil-rich fluid from the surface and below it. Filtration captures suspended solids, while the coalescing media brings mechanically dispersed and loosely emulsified oil droplets together so they rise and separate along with free-floating oil. Clarified coolant returns by gravity, with the tank, media, skimmer, pump, and discharge integrated on one skid.

The skimmer removes the oily surface layer, the bag filter captures solids, and the coalescing media separates tramp oil before clarified coolant returns by gravity.

The floating skimmer follows the fluid level and draws oil-rich fluid from the surface and below it.

The supply pump sends the collected fluid through a bag filter (100µ supplied, 1 to 200µ available) to remove suspended solids.

Droplets attract to the polypropylene plates, combine, and rise into an oil layer that overflows to the trough and gravity-drains to your drum.

A standard T.O.S.S. provides dedicated tramp oil removal from cutting fluid in CNC machine sumps, or from wash water in parts washers. Larger models serve reservoirs and coolant pits. Use the portable T1 when multiple independent reservoirs can share one separator on a planned schedule. Continuous oil loading, reservoir volume, fluid chemistry, and required treatment rate determine the configuration.

Choose between ballast and vertical floating skimmers to match sump depth, surface access, and changes in fluid level.

For deep open sumps with large level swings or turbulence, such as central filtration systems and coolant pits. Water-ballasted on site so the suction pipes sit right at the surface.
A stationary float that clamps to the side of the reservoir, skims the surface, and rides the level up and down. Built for shallow, hard-to-reach sumps; the reservoir must not drop below the float's lowest point.
Holding tramp oil below half of one percent helps extend coolant service life. Recovered oil with 1% to 2% water content may be suitable for reclamation or reuse, subject to composition, waste classification, and recipient requirements.

A surface skimmer collects floating oil; a tramp oil coalescer also brings small, separable oil droplets together for removal. T.O.S.S. combines both functions, drawing oil-rich fluid from the surface and below it, filtering suspended solids, and separating free-floating, mechanically dispersed, and loosely emulsified tramp oil. Its media separates 99% of oil droplets 20 microns and larger on the first pass before clarified fluid returns to the reservoir.
A bag filter captures suspended solids; it does not perform the same job as a coalescing oil separator. Equipment described as a tramp oil filter may combine both stages. T.O.S.S. passes incoming fluid through bag filtration before coalescing separates the oil. Top suction identifies the pickup location, not the separation method, so collecting or filtering only the surface layer may leave dispersed and loosely emulsified oil in the coolant.
How coolant filtration and tramp oil removal differ →T.O.S.S. is a coalescing oil-water separator for water-based metalworking coolants, synthetics, and alkaline wash water carrying free, dispersed, or loosely emulsified oil. Chemically emulsified oil cannot be removed through coalescing. When separation behavior is unclear, request a fluid-compatibility review.
